Alumni Gatherings

Jewish Alumni of Binghamton - The Cultural Connection (JAB)
from Dave Berkowitz '00, network coordinator

JAB held a mixer and planning meeting Jan. 28 at the home of Boaz Berkowitz '98. About 30 people showed up and enjoyed a meal of Chinese take-out while they brainstormed ideas for events for the coming year. I was very impressed by both the quality and quantity of the turnout. There was a lot of new blood who seemed very eager to contribute. I think great things will come out of that night. If those faces that showed up represent the future of JAB, JAB has a bright future ahead of it.

SEHD alumni enjoy luncheon

The School of Education and Human Development alumni didn't have far to come, but that didn't mean they were any less enthusiastic to gather for a reunion of sorts at a special luncheon on Tuesday, March 5. In fact, most just had to walk across campus for the event at the Anderson Center Reception Room. The 40-some people at the luncheon all work on campus.

Although many of the participants see each other regularly at work, it was the first time they had a chance to discover their common ties as SEHD alums and to find out just how widespread their network is.

Eighty-three SEHD alumni currently work on campus. They hold a wide range of positions in every school and division. They are even on the faculty of their alma mater, including James J. Carpenter (MAT/Social Studies '70, EdD '02), who will become an assistant professor of education in social studies education in the fall.

After sharing information on their own experiences in school and where they are now on campus, attendees got a briefing on some of the issues facing SEHD from Dean Ernest Rose.

Rose said he proposed the luncheon after realizing that the school had such a large contingent of alumni on campus. "We're very proud of the work you all do," Rose told the group. "And we thought it was a good idea to bring you all together."

The alumni were similarly enthusiastic about the gathering. "It was so nice to network with other alumni on campus who have been through similar experiences as students and employees," said Gail Glover '96, media relations specialist in the Office of Communications and Marketing. "And it was very nice of SEHD and the dean's office to recognize the work we do on campus and to know that our degrees are paying off for the campus." Glover is currently enrolled in the MASS program.

Also on hand were Ted Rector, associate dean; Marcella Keeler, assistant to the dean; and Thomas O'Brien, director of SEHD's Education Division.
