A little-known rite of spring occurs in the Nature Preserve on the Binghamton campus every year. On the first warm, wet spring evening, a half-dozen people -- made up of biology faculty, graduate and undergraduate students and Friends of the Nature Preserve -- gather along the access road bordering the Nature Preserve right after sundown to scan the road with their flashlights, watching for the annual spotted salamander crossing. The salamanders live in the old woods surrounding College-in-the-Woods, and migrate to the ponds on the other side of the access road in the spring to breed.
