Forrest Greenslade, sculptor and writer, and his daughter, artist Kathryn Armstrong have launched a new website to introduce children to art and poetry for Haiku Holiday (April 29).  “Kathryn was designing unique graphics of cute animals for a pediatrics department,” Greenslade said.  “I just couldn’t resist writing haiku about them.” She has a one-year old daughter, Nicole, to whom mom and grandpa dedicate www.haicooo.com.


Carol Harter MA ’67, PhD ’70 retired from the presidency at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas at the end of June 2006.

Paul Darnell has recently expanded and relocated his private practice as a pastoral counselor and psychotherapist in Syracuse.  He welcomes contact from other Binghamton graduates at pauldarnell@verizon.net.

Eric Robinson, MA, PhD '75, was recently promoted from associate to full professor in the Department of Mathematics at Ithaca College.  He had received tenure in the School of Humanities and Sciences in 1985.
John Bianchi was one of the first OCCT bus drivers circumnavigating the Triple Cities on a semi-regular basis.  “Working mostly at night, I fondly remember picking up groups that rode for recreation, not transportation.  They sat in the back singing, talking, playing guitars and laughing until we returned to campus, keeping me company on those long evening runs.  Thanks for the memories.”
Shelley Haven and several artists were featured in Women and the Environment, an art exhibit that ran at CUNY Kingsborough Community College Art Gallery.  Two of her paintings were selected for a group exhibit, By the Beautiful Sea, at the ‘temporary Museum in New York City.

Conquering Chronic Disorganization (Squall Press) authored by Judith Kolberg has been selected as recommended reading for the certification examination for professional organizers.   Kolberg is the founder of the National Study Group on Chronic Disorganization and the former director of professional development for the National Association of Professional Organizers (www.napo.net).

Peter Doobinin published a novel, Suburban Boy, (iUniverse, Inc. 2005).  Doobinin expresses his deep gratitude to the Binghamton teachers and students who encouraged his efforts in taking the literary path.  To find out more about the novel, visit Peter’s website:  www.peterdoobinin.com.

Richard C. Van Nostrand has been reappointed to the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation, which provides financial support to programs that help people who cannot afford legal representation.  His term will expire in 2011.  He is a partner in the Worcester office of the law firm of Mirick O’Connell.  Mr. Van Nostrand has been active in the United Way of Central Massachusetts, serving on the Board of Directors for eight years.

Jonathan C. Gibralter has been appointed president of Frostburg State University (FSU).  At the time of his appointment, he was president of Farmingdale State University of New York. 

Barbara Mandell has joined Dykema, a law firm, as a member of the intellectual property practice group in its Bloomfield Hills, Mich. office.  Her practice focuses on the litigation of intellectual property disputes.  Ms. Mandell has also practiced antitrust law for many years, both civil and criminal, beginning as a staff attorney at the Bureau of Competition of the Federal Trade Commission and then in private practice

Alan L. Rubin and his wife Robyn (Weber) Rubin ’81 recently visited Binghamton University.  He said, “Having not been back since our graduations, we were very impressed by the additions to the school, and especially the new athletic facility.”  Robyn practices construction law, while Alan continues his dental practice.  The family lives in Rochelle Park, N.J.

Jorge L. Chinea MA ’83 has published Race and Labor in the Hispanic Caribbean (University Press of Florida, 2005) for which he has been awarded a Board of Governors Faculty Recognition Award.  His book examines the social, economic and political impact of foreign immigrants in Puerto Rico during its transition from subsistence farming and ranching in the late 18th century to commercial agriculture during the first half of the 19th century.  Chinea is associate professor of history and director of the Center for Chicano-Boricua Studies at Wayne State University in Detroit.

Raymond W. Cohen has been appointed to the board of directors for BioLife Solutions, a leading manufacturer of solutions for the preservation of cells and tissues at low temperatures.  Cohen is a veteran medical technology executive, who currently serves as CEO of Symphony Medical, a California-based developer of solutions for treating heart abnormalities. 


Deborah A. Symonds MA, PhD ’85 has published Notorious Murders, Black Lanterns, and Moveable Goods (University of Akron Press, 2006).  The book explores the shadow economy of petty theft, thievery, and murder in the Old Town district of Edinburgh, Scotland in the early 19th century.  Deborah’s book examines the profession of the “entrepreneurial criminal”, focusing on the murder and sale of 20 of the city’s poorest people.  She is an associate professor of history at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

Nanette (Cumley) Tamer MA, MAT, has been promoted to full professor at Villa Julie College in Maryland.

Michael H. Frost has been named the 2006-07 Irwin R. Buchalter Professor of Law at Southwestern Law School in Los Angeles.  The Buchalter professorship is the first endowed professorship at Southwestern.  Frost has served as a legal writing consultant for more than 15 years and authored several articles on modern judicial rhetoric.

Phillip Ortiz and some classmates got together for a “Cleveland Suite #121” reunion.  He works as an area coordinator for natural sciences for Empire State College.

Denise (Stanfield) Costa retired from the U.S. Army in July 2006 after 20 years of service.  She looks forward to having time off so she can be a full-time mother.

Wendy Dackson MBA is a research fellow at Ripon College Cuddesdon, an ordination training college of the Church of England.  She earned a PhD in systematic theology from Marquette University, and her dissertation, The Ecclesiology of Archbishop William Temple, 1881-1944, was published as a book.


Steve Gould MS and his wife Shari announce the addition of Leah Veronika, who was born on May 5, 2003 and adopted from Russia on May 16, 2006.

 

Larry Haber and his wife Marcia welcomed a son, Matthew Benjamin, on June 22, 2006.  He joins brother Adam (3 years old).

Steven Daniel Heller celebrated the 20th anniversary of the 1986 Study in England program in Shakespeare country.  He reenacted the farewell feast at Leeds Castle.

Born to Lori Kerman, a daughter, Erica Rose on August 20, 2004.  Lori is a senior treasury manager with Avaya.  Her family lives in Bedminster, N.J.

Nicholas E. Pasyanos has been promoted to vice president in the individual life department of New York Life Insurance.  Pasyanos is now lead pricing actuary, responsible for all life product pricing and financial results for the company’s life insurance products.  Additionally, he works with all areas of the company, bringing product ideas from the design stage to implementation.

Karen Auster and husband Marc Appelbaum ’90 met at BU 18 years ago when she was manager of the phonathon.  NY Magazine featured nine pages of their home that Marc designed and built for them.

David Thomas Bessey MS was recently promoted to director of business development at Syracuse Research Corporation.


Steve Koren wrote and produced the movie Click, starring Adam Sandler.  He thanks everyone who went to see it.

Christopher (CJ) Fearnley, president and CEO of LinuxForce, Inc - a leading technology services provider specializing in the development, implementation, management and support of Linux-based systems - has been named to the Philadelphia Business Journal’s prestigious “40 under 40” list for 2006.

Edwin Groshans married Margaret Lorenz on February 18, 2006.  In attendance were Geoff ’92, Dina Kovar ’92 and Frank Morris ’89.

Laura Maffei published her first collection of poetry, Drops from her Umbrella (Inkling Press, 2006).  The book is a collection of tanka, the five-line lyric form originating in Japan that captures a single, subjective moment in time.  Maffei is the editor of the poetry journal American Tanka, which she founded in 1996.

Shari (Hochman) Mednick and her husband, Michael Mednick ’89, had their fourth child, a son, Adam Perrin, on June 12, 2006.  He joins brothers Logan (9 years old), Justin (5), and Ethan (3).  Shari is a fourth-grade teacher and Michael has his own law practice.  The family lives in Rock Hill, N.Y.

Robert Michelson MS ’92, writes, “My wife Margherita and I now have three sons, Matthew (6 years old), Joseph (4) and Gregory (2).  Parenting is a challenge, but it is well worth the investment of time and energy.”  Robert has been working on Wall Street for the past 15 years.  He has worked at the Federal Reserve Bank and at JP Morgan.  He has been at the New York Stock Exchange for the past 10 years and is a director of information technology for NYSE regulation.  The family lives in Plainview, N.Y.


Brian Roberts and his wife, Lauren Block, had a daughter, Ashley Mara, on May 11, 2006.  She joins her big sister Alexa (7 years old).  Brian is a programmer and systems analyst for Merrill Lynch.  The family lives in Robbinsville, N.J.

Carole (Gershowitz) Bass was recently promoted to Of Counsel at Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP.  Carole is a lawyer at the New York office where she specializes in estate planning, estate administration and estate- and trust-related litigation.  She is the author of “What if You Die and Then Have Children?” – an article about estate planning issues arising from new reproductive technologies – which appeared in the April 2006 issue of Trusts & Estates magazine.  Carole and her husband, Kenneth Bass ’91, would enjoy reconnecting with old friends from Binghamton at ckb820@nyc.rr.com.

Born to Judith Kaminsky Meyers and husband Howard, a son, William Everett, on October 31, 2005.  He joins brother Samuel (5 years old).  The family lives in Forest Hills, N.Y.

Richie Solomon was nominated for the first Emmy award honoring Outstanding Achievement in Video Content for Non-Traditional Delivery Platforms.  Solomon is currently the development executive and a writer for Stranger Adventures which is distributed exclusively online at www.StrangerAdventures.com.  Solomon has written scripts for the big and small screens and a few for the giant screen.  He has previously developed projects at companies such as Harvey Entertainment, Fuzzy Logic Productions, Zoo Film, GSD&M and Chemistry Pictures.

Aliki Dragona was one of the recipients of the 2006 Academic Federation Excellence Awards, which recognize the contributions by members of the federation to the teaching and research mission of the University of California at Davis.  Dragona’s award was for excellence in teaching in the university’s writing program.

Howard Allen Goldberg has been named Executive Director for the Empire Region of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism.  He lives in Albany, N.Y. with his wife Jill and his sons Samson Lev (7 years old) and Shore Menachem (4).

Born to Hilari Dobbs Graff and her husband, Jason, a son, Alex Connor, on December 7, 2005.  He joins sister Rachel (2 years old). 


Erica (Petacchi) Kim and her husband Jeff welcomed their two children from Guatemala on March 24, 2006.  Cassandra Caroline was born on November 24, 2005 and Carter Petacchi was born on December 3, 2005.



Audrey Levitt  visited Rome, Italy this past summer, where she, by chance, ran into Mary Woolson, Assistant VP for Alumni and Constituent Relations, while waiting on line to get into the Vatican.

Daniel Joseph Nacarato welcomed a son, Dante Joseph, on June 2, 2006 in Scottsdale, Ariz.  He weighed 7 pounds, and was 21 inches long.

Born to Eddie O’Connor PhD, and his wife, Lisa, a son, Tynan James, on January 18, 2006.  He joins brother Shea (4 years old) and twins Cian and Mckenzie (3).  “I ran my first NYC marathon in November 2005 for stress management!”


Born to Liz Saunders Rosenblatt, and her husband, David, twin sons Brandon Isaac and Gavin Mitchell on August 5, 2005.  Liz is a fourth-grade teacher.  The family lives in Robbinsville, N.J.

Judy Seidman has been elected to the board of directors for the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants.  She is an audit manager with the firm Friedman LLP.  She is the immediate past president of the Manhattan/Bronx chapter.

Tim Simonds and Helen L. Monaco adopted their son Alexander on June 6, 2005 from Moscow.  He joins a loving older sister Gia (5 years old).

Born to Fess Wofse and wife Elisa, a daughter, Eva Noelle, on December 27, 2005.  She joins brothers Max (4 years old) and Samuel (2).  Fess is the controller for Citigroup Property Investors, a real estate investment manager.  The family lives in Township of Washington, N.J.

Jeana DelRosso has published Writing Catholic Women:  Contemporary International Catholic Girlhood Narratives (Palgrave Press, 2005), a book that examines the interplay of gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, and sexuality through the lens of Catholicism.  Using a wide range of works by women writers, DelRosso forges interdisciplinary connections among women’s studies, religion, and late 20th century literature.  She suggests that the girlhood narratives of such writers constitute highly-charged sites of their differing gestures toward Catholicism.

Kelly (Huckno) Gil and her husband, William, had a son, Dominic Vicente, on May 9, 2006.  He joins brother Alexander (2 years old).  Kelly is an attorney with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in Washington.  The family lives in Arlington, Va.

Leah Karliner has joined Alan Taylor Communications in New York as Creative Director.  The company is a leader in lifestyle and sports public relations.  She’ll assist with the development of strategic marketing programs for the agency’s growing client list. 

Born to Jacqueline (Woods) Katz and her husband, Adam, a son, Dovid, on January 26, 2006.  He joins brother Yaakov (2 years old).  The family lives in Passaic, N.J.

Born to Marla (Wolfson) Kleinbaum and her husband, Gregg, a daughter, Ella Samara, on March 16, 2006.  She joins brother Jordan (4 years old).  Marla is an associate at Goldman, Sachs & Co.  The family lives in Scotch Plains, N.J.


Scott Kocher married Amy Branum on April 16, 2006 in a private ceremony at Anaeho’omalu Bay in Hawai’i.  Scott works for the U.S. Department of Defense.  The couple lives in Arlington, Va.

Born to Matt Rosen and Alyse (Patsiner) Rosen, a son, Jared Benjamin, on April 8, 2006.  He joins brother Bradley (3 years old). 

Leslie Schwarz married Jeff Dalton in Virginia on June 4, 2006.  Leslie is a clinical psychologist in private practice, and Jeff is a principle applications engineer for a major software company.  The couple lives in Vienna, Va.

Penny Somer-Greif joined the staff at Ober|Kaler, a national law firm that provides integrated regulatory, transaction, and litigation services to financial health care construction and other business organizations.  She’ll work with clients on transactional, merger, and corporate matters.  She lives near Potomac, Md.

Paul Aversano and his wife Sylvia (Crecco) Aversano had a daughter, Olivia Rose, on April 15, 2006.  She joins sister Natalie Victoria (2 years old).  Paul is currently a managing director and co-head of the transaction advisory group at Alvarez & Marsal LLC in New York.  The family lives in Manhasset Hills, N.Y.

Amy Dacey has been honored as the alumni recipient of the 2006 Alice Paul Award.  The Alice Paul Awards are sponsored by American University’s School of Public Affairs’ Women & Politics Institute and the Women’s Initiative.  Dacey received her master’s degree in Political Science from American University’s School of Public Affairs.  She currently serves as U.S. Sen. John Kerry’s national political director at Keeping America’s Promise PAC and was the traveling political director during his 2004 presidential campaign.  

Born to Jessica Fishkin-Korman and her husband, Steven, a son, Tyler Aaron, on April 7, 2006.  He joins sister Avery Reese (2 years old).

Born to Cathleen Carroll Krage and her husband, Joshua, a daughter, Susannah, who joins older sister Grace.  Cathleen teaches computers in the Archdiocese of Washington and lives with her family in Lanham, Md.

Born to Mark Andrew Leach and his wife, Heather, a son, David Richmond, on May 4, 2006.  He joins his sister Emma (2 years old).

Shani (Levitt) Lipset and her husband, Craig, welcomed their second child Rebecca Meredith on February 14, 2006.  She joins big brother Ethan (3 years old).  Shani is a family physician in private practice near Boston.  Her family lives in Wellesley, Mass.

Born to Lori Coager Thiele and her husband, Erik, a daughter, Grace Amanda, on November 24, 2005, Thanksgiving Day.  The family resides in Lake Katrine, N.Y.

Ana Aparicio has published Dominican-Americans and the Politics of Empowerment (University Press of Florida, 2006).  In this book, she examines the ways Dominican-Americans have shaped a new presence in New York City politics.  Aparicio is assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. 

Born to Dan Calabrese and his wife, Nora, a son, Daniel Nicholas, on May 3, 2005.  Dan is a managing consultant with IBM Global Business Services.  Nora is an elementary school art teacher.  The family lives in Mineola, N.Y.

Eric J. Esoda MS was elected president of the Northeastern Chapter of the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants for the 2006-07 fiscal year.  He is the director of finance for the Northeastern Pennsylvania Industrial Resource Center in Hanover Township, Pa.

Born to Natalie (Goldenberg) Kossak and her husband, Andrew, twin boys, Ryan Benjamin and Matthew Henry, on April 26, 2005.  Natalie is vice president and assistant general counsel with Independent Fiduciary Services in Newark, N.J.  The family lives in Wyckoff, N.J.

Cassandra Ramirez married Kenneth L. King Jr. on May 4, 2006.  The couple lives in Philadelphia.

Born to Melanie Ryan and husband, Walter, a son, William Ryan Webert, on October 26, 2005.  The family lives in Rochester, N.Y.

Angela Jeanne (Sbani) Castillo married Gabriel Castillo in Aruba on February 3, 2006.  “It was a surprise wedding, I didn’t know I was getting married.  He proposed in the airport in Aruba and we got married the next day on the beach.”  Only immediate family attended the wedding.

Debra Ann (Dolinski) Walter is almost done with an MBA in global management from the University of Phoenix.  She is married with five kids (ages 9, 6, 4, 2, and 1).
