Kenneth E. Elstein was recently re-elected as councillor in the Hampshire Council of Governments, the successor to Hampshire County, Mass., where he serves as finance committee chair.
Timothy P. Roth MA was recently named by Texas Gov. Rick Perry to a task force that will recommend how to rein in skyrocketing property tax appraisals. Perry issued an executive order creating the 15-member panel; recommendations were due before the start of the legislative session in January 2007. Roth is a professor of economics at the University of Texas in El Paso. He is also chair of the Department of Economics and Finance at the university.

The firm will focus on investigating and analyzing building performance defects for litigation and dispute-resolution proceedings. Erwin is a licensed architect with more than 25 years of experience with prominent firms in New York.

Robert Bodian made the list of New York Super Lawyers for 2006 - a distinction awarded to only five percent of attorneys in New York. The list was published in The New York Times in July 2006 and included lawyers who attained the highest degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. Bodian heads the litigation section in the New York office of Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo PC.

Karen Remmler is the co-editor of Artists, Intellectuals, and World War II: The Pontigny Encounters at Mount Holyoke College, 1942-1944 (University of Massachusetts Press, 2006). The book is a collection of original essays assessing the lasting impact and contemporary significance of Pontigny-en-Amerique. She is a professor of German studies at Mount Holyoke College.

Tom Kennedy MA, MA ’88, is a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army and dropped a line from Kabul, Afghanistan, where he planned to stay through the fall of 2006 as a member of the Joint Center for Operational Analysis. The Army reservist had not yet been deployed overseas, but said he was grateful for the chance to volunteer. In his civilian life, he’s an attorney.
Robert Rosh PhD has been promoted to vice president and general counsel for New York Life Insurance Company. He is an adjunct professor of insurance law at New York Law School, Benjamin Cardozo School of Law and St. John’s Law School. Brinille Elaine Ellis received the State Department’s Meritorious Honor Award for innovative public diplomacy programming that educates the publics of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member countries about post-Cold War NATO. Brinille was one of 25 Americans who participated in August 2006 in a young leader’s conference in Hamburg, Germany, covering how to enhance relations between Germans and Americans.

Chris Voparil MA ’93 published Richard Rorty: Politics and Vision (Rowman and Littlefield Press, 2006). The book is his first full-length work devoted to Rorty, one of America’s greatest living philosophers, from the perspective of political theory. Christopher Maulik married Leila Mosavi ’97 in Aruba on Feb. 5, 2005. In attendance were Laura Baecher ’97, Caroline Rosengarden ’97 and Michelle Sadowsky ’97. Chris is an orthodontist and Leila has a doctorate in biochemistry and works as a regional medical specialist for Aspreva Pharmaceuticals. The two met as introductory-chemistry lab partners in 1994 and have been together ever since. They live in Solana Beach, Calif.

Robert Levy completed a residency in emergency medicine in June 2006 and is completing a one-year disaster-medicine fellowship at UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson (RWJ) Medical School in New Brunswick, N.J. He works as an attending physician in the RWJ emergency room.

A. Paul Genato joined the law firm of McCarter & English as an associate in the Newark, N.J., office. He specializes in local property taxation. He earned his law degree at Seton Hall University in 2005 and clerked for Judge Vito L. Bianco in the Tax Court of New Jersey.
Erin Lynn (Yetsko) Frye MBA ’03 and her husband, Kevin, welcomed son Zachary Kevin on July 11, 2006. The family lives in Vestal, N.Y.
Jennifer Lynn Halko is in her second year of working as a school psychologist for the Fredericksburg City Public Schools in Virginia. After graduating from Binghamton, she received advanced degrees in school psychology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Robyn Sachs completed an MBA in accountancy at Baruch College in December 2005 and has been working in public accounting since January 2006. At press time, she was also training for the 2006 New York City Marathon.

Jonida and Jeremy are both medical students and expect to graduate within the next two years. They live on Staten Island. Jonida continues to write, and Jeremy learned how to fly a private jet plane. He flew her on a jet around New York harbor as a pre-wedding present.

IN MEMORIAM
Nancy (LeVine) Meyers ’62 died on Aug. 6, 2006, at age 65. She was a political science major at Harpur College, and earned a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro. She spent most of her career teaching social studies in public schools in North Carolina. She loved outdoor activities and travel. She visited 47 of the 50 states and almost 20 foreign countries. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, B. David Meyers ’62, two children, and three grandchildren.
Stan Tupper ’67 died in January 2006. He is survived by his wife, Jill Kaplan Tupper, who will continue the family’s law practice Tupper & Tupper on the coast of Maine.
Bernice Kanner ’69, MA ’72 died on Oct. 24, 2006, in Manhattan at the age of 57. According to The New York Times, she is perhaps best known for writing the “On Madison Avenue” column for New York magazine from 1981 to 1994. She also wrote 12 books. Kanner is survived by her husband, David Cuming, and her son and daughter, Andrew and Elisabeth.
Martha (Maltz) Cypher ’71 died from non-smoking lung cancer at the age of 57 on Oct. 20, 2006, in New York City. She was previously married to Jeff Kornstein ’70 and is survived by her children, Jamie and Russell, her parents, Morton and Mary, and sisters Elizabeth (Maltz) Levine ’69 and Suzy. “Marty” was a human resources executive for Gannett, then developed and ran her own IT recruiting firm. James A. “Jim” Walker III ’80 died on July 24, 2006, in Gainesville, Fla., from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. He was 49 years old. He is survived by his parents, James and Marjorie, his wife, Nancy, and their three children, Rachel (20 years old), Megan (17), and Ben (14). He worked in several senior financial positions. Most recently, he was a senior vice president of finance for the international division of Office Depot.
Lovette George ’83 died on Sept. 6, 2006, at the age of 44. Playbill called her “the actress whose optimistic soprano brought light to Off-Broadway’s The Musical of Musicals and Lincoln Center Theater’s Carousel, A New Brain, and Marie Christine. She is survived by her parents, Carol and Richard George, and her two sisters, Richelle and Carina.
Joseph P. Sullivan ’04 was killed in a car crash while driving near Pine Grove, Pa., on March 2, 2006. He was survived by his parents and four older brothers. He was 23 years old. Before graduating from Binghamton, he was an intern for the White House. He planned to pursue a political career in Binghamton.
