Kenneth E. Elstein was recently re-elected as councillor in the Hampshire Council of Governments, the successor to Hampshire County, Mass., where he serves as finance committee chair.

Timothy P. Roth MA was recently named by Texas Gov. Rick Perry to a task force that will recommend how to rein in skyrocketing property tax appraisals. Perry issued an executive order creating the 15-member panel; recommendations were due before the start of the legislative session in January 2007. Roth is a professor of economics at the University of Texas in El Paso. He is also chair of the Department of Economics and Finance at the university.
J.B. Royal MS '77, and his wife, Susan, welcomed son Samuel Arthur, on Aug. 12, 2006. The family lives in Boston.
Cheryl (Iris) Hirshman is getting nostalgic for old friends. She has lived in Massachusetts since graduating. She has worked in film and television, taught at a number of colleges, traveled the world, been the director of a non-profit film arts organization, and continued her love and practice of painting. She teaches at Mt. Ida College in Massachusetts and gives video-journalism instruction to inner-city youth in Boston. She has two children: Caleb (18 years old) and Marlie (15). Don Erwin and two partners have announced the establishment of a new forensic architecture and engineering firm, Erwin Lobo Bielinski PLLC, based in the New York City area. The firm will focus on investigating and analyzing building performance defects for litigation and dispute-resolution proceedings. Erwin is a licensed architect with more than 25 years of experience with prominent firms in New York.

Joseph Kosiewska MA published a collection of short stories, The Secret Nature of Space and Time (synergEbooks.com, 2006).

Michael Laser published his second novel Dark & Light: A Love Story (Permanent Press, 2006).
Linda Budinoff Spurlock MA ’86 edited Caves & Culture: 10,000 Years of Ohio History (Kent State University Press, 2006). The book seeks to address a number of problems, such as the use of rock shelters by humans through time. She is instructor of sciences at Stark State College in Ohio.

Robert Bodian made the list of New York Super Lawyers for 2006 - a distinction awarded to only five percent of attorneys in New York. The list was published in The New York Times in July 2006 and included lawyers who attained the highest degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. Bodian heads the litigation section in the New York office of Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo PC.

Kenneth Wayne Reinstein lives in Miami Beach, Fla., where he’s a private tutor, specializing in math, English and standardized test preparation. He’s also an expert witness actuary.

Chris Visco MA was selected as Suffolk County Science Teacher of the Year for 2006. In addition, he was a finalist for 2007 New York State Teacher of the Year.
Karen Redfield MA received a 2006 Distinguished Teacher Award from Madison Area Technical College in Wisconsin, where she works as an English instructor.

Karen Remmler is the co-editor of Artists, Intellectuals, and World War II: The Pontigny Encounters at Mount Holyoke College, 1942-1944 (University of Massachusetts Press, 2006). The book is a collection of original essays assessing the lasting impact and contemporary significance of Pontigny-en-Amerique. She is a professor of German studies at Mount Holyoke College.

He’s enjoying teaching math and science at the Zurich International School in Switzerland. He had, for nine years, worked as chair of the math and science departments at Pomperaug High School in Southbury, Conn. He’s still running, but says, at his stage of life, it’s more like a jog.

Jim Rollo moved back to Vestal, N.Y., from Aventura, Fla. He said his daughter Nichole (Rollo) Damiani MASS ’03 lives in Pasadena, Calif., with her husband and works in marketing for an eating disorders clinic. Jim’s son, Joshua, is a junior in the School of Management.

 

Lisa J. Allen has joined the Buffalo office of law firm Harris Beach PLLC. She focuses her legal practice on trusts and estates. She represents families of people with disabilities. Allen also serves as an adjunct professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Law, where she provides instruction to second- and third-year law students in special education and disability law. She lives in East Amherst, N.Y.

Keith Sibick retired from the U.S. Navy in 2005 after 20 years as a naval intelligence officer. He is now a senior intelligence community liaison for the Department of Homeland Security in Washington. He lives in northern Virginia with his wife and two children.

Helane (Brachfeld) Colvin, and her husband, Stephen, welcomed daughter Mikaela Pearl on Feb. 22, 2006. She joined big brother Sean Isaiah.

Tom Kennedy MA, MA ’88, is a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army and dropped a line from Kabul, Afghanistan, where he planned to stay through the fall of 2006 as a member of the Joint Center for Operational Analysis. The Army reservist had not yet been deployed overseas, but said he was grateful for the chance to volunteer. In his civilian life, he’s an attorney.

Robert Rosh PhD has been promoted to vice president and general counsel for New York Life Insurance Company. He is an adjunct professor of insurance law at New York Law School, Benjamin Cardozo School of Law and St. John’s Law School. He and his wife, Beth, live with their teenage son and daughter in Bayside, N.Y.

Nancy Samotin married Larry Price ’86 on Sept. 10, 2006. They honeymooned in Hawaii. The couple lives in Forest Hills, N.Y. Larry is an equity analyst at Citigroup and Nancy is a magistrate for the State of New York. Karen Halvorsen Schreck, MA published her first novel Dream Journal (Hyperion Books for Children, 2006). Written for readers ages 12 and up, this novel tells the story of an isolated and frightened teenager whose mother has breast cancer.

Gabriel J. Toubia MBA joined TD Banknorth Leasing Corporation as a vice president in Burlington, Mass. He is responsible for portfolio management and underwriting equipment financing transactions for corporate customers. He lives in Windham, N.H.

Michael Boston MA, MBA, was appointed assistant professor at Metropolitan State University’s College of Arts and Sciences in Saint Paul, Minn. He will teach courses in ethnic studies and African-American studies.

Brinille Elaine Ellis received the State Department’s Meritorious Honor Award for innovative public diplomacy programming that educates the publics of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member countries about post-Cold War NATO. Brinille was one of 25 Americans who participated in August 2006 in a young leader’s conference in Hamburg, Germany, covering how to enhance relations between Germans and Americans.

Richard Vang published My Dad is a Freemason (Square Cirle Press, 2006), a book to help Freemasons explain their organization to their children. Until recently, Masonic tradition had discouraged the discussion of lodge activities with family members.

Chris Voparil MA ’93 published Richard Rorty: Politics and Vision (Rowman and Littlefield Press, 2006). The book is his first full-length work devoted to Rorty, one of America’s greatest living philosophers, from the perspective of political theory. Chris teaches philosophy and political theory at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla.

Katie McLean recently became a member of the ensemble at the Lifeline Theatre in Chicago. She has been involved, as a director and assistant director, with several Lifeline productions. In her spare time, she is writing her first full-length novel.

William Teator and his family have relocated from Washington to Saratoga Springs, N.Y. His daughter, Kendra, turned 4 years old in August 2006, and his son, Alexander, turned 2 in July. William said his business, Capital Advocates, will continue to provide government relations, public affairs and business-development strategies. He plans to make frequent trips to Washington but says, “It is great to be home.”

Stan Choi has been married to his wife Eileen for more than two years. He began attending Nova Southeastern University to study optometry in August 2006.

Edward A. Medina completed a master’s degree in education at Elmira College during the summer of 2006 and accepted a position to teach English at Union-Endicott High School in Endicott, N.Y.

Jim Weiner and his wife, Mindi, welcomed son Bradley Preston on July 7, 2006. He joined sister Talia Fae (4 years old). Jim is CFO at Indus Capital Partners, a hedge fund based in New York City. The family lives in Paramus, N.J.

 

Christopher Maulik married Leila Mosavi ’97 in Aruba on Feb. 5, 2005. In attendance were Laura Baecher ’97, Caroline Rosengarden ’97 and Michelle Sadowsky ’97. Chris is an orthodontist and Leila has a doctorate in biochemistry and works as a regional medical specialist for Aspreva Pharmaceuticals. The two met as introductory-chemistry lab partners in 1994 and have been together ever since. They live in Solana Beach, Calif.



Stacy (Levine) Ackerman and her husband, Larry, welcomed twins Claire Rebekah and Joshua Blake on Oct. 7, 2005. The family lives in Plainview, N.Y. Stacy works as an assistant vice president in the finance department of hedge fund Ivy Asset Management.

 

   

Erica Binen and Jonathan Ben-Zvi were married on June 11, 2006. Alumni in the wedding included Heather Binen '01, maid of honor, and Carole Scarzella '99, bridesmaid. Amy (Bleckinger) James and her husband, Daniel, welcomed daughter Sydney Anne on Oct. 19, 2005. Amy is a biologist with the North Carolina Department of Transportation in Raleigh.

Robert Levy completed a residency in emergency medicine in June 2006 and is completing a one-year disaster-medicine fellowship at UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson (RWJ) Medical School in New Brunswick, N.J. He works as an attending physician in the RWJ emergency room.

Stacy (Krug) Perrenod and Cully Perrenod ’98 welcomed son Evan Charles on July 27, 2006. The family lives in Connecticut.

Catherine (Mackin) Sabol and her husband, Andrew, welcomed daughter Elsie Cecilia on June 2, 2006.

Stacy (Santiago) Pisani and her husband, John Pisani ’97, welcomed Chloe Isabella Antoinette on Aug. 25, 2006. In May, Stacy graduated magna cum laude from Mercy College with a bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology.

Jamie Schimmel and his wife, Amy, welcomed son Noah Hamilton on Dec. 16, 2005. He joined sister Katelyn (3 years old). The family recently moved to Cary, N.C. Jamie has a position as associate director of clinical operations and medical affairs for Talecris Biotherapeutics.

Lisa (Scott) Natoli opened a law firm, Natoli & Natoli, LLP, with her husband, Steven, in Norwich, N.Y. Lisa was appointed to serve as co-chair of the matrimonial and family law committee for the Women’s Bar Association for the State of New York.

Monica (Tullo) Mackin and her husband, James, welcomed son Lucas James on April 20, 2006. He joined big sister Lillian Hannah (2 years old). The family lives in Hopewell Junction, N.Y.

Valerie Mihalopoulos married William LaRose, whom she met on a junior year semester abroad trip to London. The wedding took place in her hometown of Stamford, Conn. Willow Cox ’99 attended. Valerie is a high school English teacher and directs fall productions. In addition, she runs two small businesses with her husband. They run a bed and breakfast (www.larosebandb.com) and a small antique business.

Jill (Shankman) Valentino welcomed daughter Saige Angeline on July 8, 2006.

Jennifer (Dohn) Daus and her husband, Robert, welcomed son Jacob Peter on Oct. 8, 2006.

Kimberly Fezza married Robert Kall on Oct. 22, 2004. Binghamton alumni who attended: Stacy (Durr) Albert ’95, John Albert ’96, Rebecca Reaves, Marc Chin and Christopher Mayr, all ’00. On April 22, 2006, the Kalls welcomed daughter Alexandria Faith. Both parents are Suffolk County police officers.

Jessica Lynne Heend married Roland Wells Skemer ’02 on June 18, 2006, in Roslyn, N.Y. Erin Cummings ’00 and Rachele Colantuono ’01, MAT ’02, attended the wedding. Alyssa is a health educator in the Scarsdale School District. The couple lives in Manhattan.

Dana (Bergman) Grynbaum and her husband, Brian, welcomed a son, Joshua Aaron, on September 26, 2006. The family lives in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Shira (van Asselt) Udin and her husband, Andrew Udin ’99, welcomed son Zachary Ryan on March 28, 2006. Andrew is an attorney at Robins, Kaplan, Miller, and Ciresi LLP. Shira was a business consultant, but will be a stay-at-home mom. The family lives in Washington.

Deep Parekh joined the New York office of Alvarez & Marsal Transaction Advisory Group, a division of Alvarez & Marsal, an independent, privately held global professional services firm. Parekh specializes in accounting and financial analysis. He was previously a manager with the transaction services practice of KPMG. He’s a member of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Lori Hochberg married Michael Fettner on May 21, 2006. The ceremony took place in Woodbury, N.Y., and was followed by three weeks in Hawaii. The couple resides in Manhattan. Binghamton alumni who attended the wedding: Tony Chi Yan Ho ’00, Beth (Applebome) Cohen ’98, and Alan Queen ’81. Lori celebrated her fifth anniversary at Simon & Schuster in July 2006.


Lauren Andrews is living in Santiago, Chile, and working as public relations director for the volunteer organization Voluntarios de la Esperanza. Leah Umansky married Phillip Mandel on June 25, 2006, in Huntington, N.Y. Jessica Rose Silver married Joshua David Cohen ’02, MAT ’03, on Aug. 13, 2006, in Peekskill, N.Y. The couple met at Binghamton University in 1999. The bride’s mother is Sherill (Steinberg) Silver ’74. The wedding party included Eric Talve and Aly Lakhaney, both ’02; and David Moshashvill and Justin Mancini, both ’03. The couple lives in Fresh Meadows, N.Y. Josh teaches English at Jamaica High School in Queens. Jessica is a licensed acupuncturist in Manhattan.


Lisa Michelle Ghezzi married J. Michael Barcak ’04 on May 19, 2006, exactly five years after they started dating at Binghamton University. Rebecca Saladis ’02 was the matron of honor. Student J. Matthew Barcak was best man; James Macfarlane ’02 and Christopher McGuire ’04 were groomsmen.


Colleen Case married David Doyle on Sept. 23, 2006. Bridesmaids included Alexandra Owakil, Melanie Jeune, and Elana (Sturman) Bandel, all ’02. The couple lives in Delaware.

A. Paul Genato joined the law firm of McCarter & English as an associate in the Newark, N.J., office. He specializes in local property taxation. He earned his law degree at Seton Hall University in 2005 and clerked for Judge Vito L. Bianco in the Tax Court of New Jersey.

Erin Lynn (Yetsko) Frye MBA ’03 and her husband, Kevin, welcomed son Zachary Kevin on July 11, 2006. The family lives in Vestal, N.Y.

Jennifer Lynn Halko is in her second year of working as a school psychologist for the Fredericksburg City Public Schools in Virginia. After graduating from Binghamton, she received advanced degrees in school psychology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Robyn Sachs completed an MBA in accountancy at Baruch College in December 2005 and has been working in public accounting since January 2006. At press time, she was also training for the 2006 New York City Marathon.

Morgan Seinfeld married Seth Kurpiel on June 25, 2006 at Bridgeview Yacht Club in Island Park, N.Y. Morgan is a geriatric nurse. Shoshana Bruckheimer ’02 was the matron of honor. Erin Rafferty married Charlies Palian ’00 on Aug. 26, 2006 in Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y. Jonida Zego married Jeremy Garlick ’03 on June 10, 2006. The wedding party included Tom Robinson ’03, Kat Minerly ’04, Allie Shapiro ’02, Sara Karjoo ’03 and Bella Tsvaygenbaum ’03. Jonida and Jeremy are both medical students and expect to graduate within the next two years. They live on Staten Island. Jonida continues to write, and Jeremy learned how to fly a private jet plane. He flew her on a jet around New York harbor as a pre-wedding present.

Leigh Finkel and Benjamin J. Spiewak were married on May 28, 2006, which was six years after meeting at freshman orientation. Marc Lessner and Julie Nuba, both ’04, were in the wedding party.



IN MEMORIAM

Nancy (LeVine) Meyers ’62 died on Aug. 6, 2006, at age 65. She was a political science major at Harpur College, and earned a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro. She spent most of her career teaching social studies in public schools in North Carolina. She loved outdoor activities and travel. She visited 47 of the 50 states and almost 20 foreign countries. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, B. David Meyers ’62, two children, and three grandchildren.

Stan Tupper ’67 died in January 2006. He is survived by his wife, Jill Kaplan Tupper, who will continue the family’s law practice Tupper & Tupper on the coast of Maine.

Bernice Kanner ’69, MA ’72 died on Oct. 24, 2006, in Manhattan at the age of 57. According to The New York Times, she is perhaps best known for writing the “On Madison Avenue” column for New York magazine from 1981 to 1994. She also wrote 12 books. Kanner is survived by her husband, David Cuming, and her son and daughter, Andrew and Elisabeth.

Martha (Maltz) Cypher ’71 died from non-smoking lung cancer at the age of 57 on Oct. 20, 2006, in New York City. She was previously married to Jeff Kornstein ’70 and is survived by her children, Jamie and Russell, her parents, Morton and Mary, and sisters Elizabeth (Maltz) Levine ’69 and Suzy. “Marty” was a human resources executive for Gannett, then developed and ran her own IT recruiting firm. James A. “Jim” Walker III ’80 died on July 24, 2006, in Gainesville, Fla., from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. He was 49 years old. He is survived by his parents, James and Marjorie, his wife, Nancy, and their three children, Rachel (20 years old), Megan (17), and Ben (14). He worked in several senior financial positions. Most recently, he was a senior vice president of finance for the international division of Office Depot.

Lovette George ’83 died on Sept. 6, 2006, at the age of 44. Playbill called her “the actress whose optimistic soprano brought light to Off-Broadway’s The Musical of Musicals and Lincoln Center Theater’s Carousel, A New Brain, and Marie Christine. She is survived by her parents, Carol and Richard George, and her two sisters, Richelle and Carina.

Joseph P. Sullivan ’04 was killed in a car crash while driving near Pine Grove, Pa., on March 2, 2006. He was survived by his parents and four older brothers. He was 23 years old. Before graduating from Binghamton, he was an intern for the White House. He planned to pursue a political career in Binghamton.
