DEATHS

Frederick L. Kennedy '50 died January 6, 2005. A veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps, he was decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross and three Air Medals. He was a retired teacher after working for 24 years in the Union-Endicott School District. As a dedicated and involved alumnus, Fred established an endowed scholarship with the School of Education and Human Development in 1997. The Fred L. Kennedy Scholarship in Social Studies Education will benefit future students in ways that will make it possible for them to extend their teaching talents to countless students through the coming years.

Floyd Harold "Rudy" Lawson '50 died February 13, 2005, at the age of 82, at his residence in Pinehurst, N.C. He had a successful and varied career which included serving as the general manager at Link Aviation, the chairman at Universal and the president and CEO of Dover Corporation. For his dedication to the community, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Binghamton University Alumni Association in 2000. He is survived by his children and grandchildren.

Camille Roach '50 died February 9, 2005, at the age of 82. He was a veteran of WWII, a graduate of Triple Cities College and retired from a career as a lawyer. In addition to his activities in community service, he also served as an Alumni Association board member. He is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren.

S(usan) Vida (Katkin) Berkowitz '63, from Brookline, Mass., died January 6, 2005. Vida was an attorney who began her practice as a legal services lawyer specializing in
consumer affairs, and later moved into private practice working on employment and labor issues. Much of her legal work involved cases where a single person was mistreated, which she managed to see as representative of a larger institutional injustice, so that in helping her client she also repaired the law. Many people who never heard of her owe their peace of mind or their unemployment benefits or their enjoyment of other important rights to her. She was a member of the board, and sometime board chair, of the Massachusetts Law Reform Institute. She is survived by her husband, Dennis Geller '66, and two children, Elizabeth and Joshua.

Curtis Joseph '75 died January 2, 2005, after a four-month illness. He was the principal of a private investigation company based in Jackson, N.J. Friend David Weiss '76 said that Curtis loved Binghamton and the friends he made here. He is survived by his wife, Alice.

Staci (Dixon/Rodriguez) Lightburn '92 died November 11, 2004. "Staci suffered for many years during her battle against cancer," said friend Tonya Parris '92. She is survived by her husband, Carl.

Gustavo De Mello '98, MBA '00 died February 10, 2005, at the age of 38, in a hit and run accident.
Originally from Uruguay, he came to Binghamton in fall 1997 as a transfer student from Broome Community College. After graduating from Binghamton, Gustavo enrolled at USC for his PhD in marketing. Gustavo was scheduled to defend his dissertation in April and already had a job offer from Dartmouth. An avid reader and running, skydiving and outdoors enthusiast, he was a friendly, popular person who will be missed by friends both home and abroad.

N. Theodore Sommer '58 died January 1, 2005, of complications of a brain tumor.
A graduate of Harpur College and Cornell Law School, he was a dedicated volunteer for the State University of New York, serving on the Board of Trustees, and as Binghamton University Foundation president, vice president and board member. Linda J. Battaglini '71, MA '77, and former Board of Directors president, remembers
Ted fondly: "Ted Sommer brought a quality to his leadership that helped to bridge historically difficult situations with compassion, wisdom and integrity. The changes set in motion during his tenure at the Foundation opened the door to a new era in building alumni support for the University. I valued his counsel, which he generously extended to personal as well as University concerns. His gentle gifts graced our community and we are the better for having known him. My heartfelt condolences go to his family."
As a partner in the law firm of Hinman, Howard and Kattell since 1970, he was one of the premiere litigators in New York state and handled many of the firm's most complicated cases. In recognition of service to his profession, the University and the community, he received the Binghamton University Alumni Association's Glenn G. Bartle Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1986. He served as an outstanding alumni volunteer for Binghamton.

Vice President for External Affairs Tom Kelly remembers Ted: "In 1995-96, Ted Sommer served as co-chair of the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the founding of Binghamton University, and I had the privilege of serving as co-chair with him. Ted was brilliant, insightful, and had a genuine passion for the University, which he openly displayed. His dedication to and affection for Binghamton enabled him to speak in a most articulate and heartfelt manner at many of the major events during the year-long celebration. Ted had the respect of every member of the planning committee which looked to him to skillfully navigate the difficult decisions which ultimately led to a very successful celebration. And the success of the celebration, which is largely due to Ted's efforts, set the stage for our subsequent, first-ever comprehensive gifts campaign for Binghamton, which exceeded its goal by 20 percent, and did so one year early. The pride and enthusiasm which Ted had for Binghamton was conveyed through him to our alumni and friends who participated in the celebration and the campaign. Binghamton University has lost one of its finest graduates and best friends."

He also served as a lecturer in law and business law at Binghamton University's School of Management and Harpur College. Alumnus Craig Medwick '74 remembers Ted from his days as a student: "I was graduated as a math major. But I decided to go to law school largely because of Ted's influence. He made his Business Law course an exciting learning experience and great fun. When I applied to law school and then when I was made a partner at my firm, Ted was always helpful with sage advice and sincere thoughts. He was a great teacher and mentor."

As an active community leader, he was involved with a great number of organizations, including the Broome County Bar Association (president), Broome County World Affairs Council, Broome County Community
Ambassador Project (ambassador to Brazil), the Jewish Federation of Broome County (president) and Hillel Academy (president).
