Travel program off to a great start

The inaugural travel program sponsored by the Binghamton University Alumni Association was an unqualified success. That’s the consensus opinion, reports University adjunct lecturer Carol Hanscom who, along with husband Tom Kremer, professor in the Theatre Department, were the tour leaders. They led a group of "congenial, adventurous, smart, fun-loving, theater-loving people" on the tour, "London Theater and the Art of Adaptation." It turned into an unbeatable way to spend the second week
of January.

In addition to taking in four theater performances and participating in informed and lively after-dinner discussions -- including one held in a private dining room at The George Inn that dates back to 1540, participants got insider looks at the Royal National Theatre and the reconstructed Globe Theatre, courtesy of backstage tours. Any visit to the British Museum, Oxford and Stratford-upon-Avon is memorable, but the group’s tours were enhanced by lively guides who contributed little-known and sometimes funky information about them.

Participants had plenty of time to go their own ways, too. Their choices represent an eclectic array of interests: the Tower of London; Roman excavations in The City; walking tours of Dickens’ London, Oscar Wilde haunts and a Jack The Ripper walk; a journey to Greenwich to see the Cutty Sark; palaces; high teas; shopping at Harrod’s; and pub crawling.

"All of us left wanting more," says Hanscom. And you can’t get a better review than that.

Department of Theatre Alumni Reunion
The Department of Theatre is organizing a reunion within a reunion during Homecoming. It’s been a while since the last organized get-together and with an enthusiastic push from Orestes Mihaly ’85, we are gathering names now in order to reach as many people as possible. The goal is to contact those alumni who were involved in theater productions, majors, minors -- anyone and everyone who’s bonded to the Theatre Department over the years.

For alumni who graduated in 1980 through 1985, please send your name and e-mail address to OMihaly@prg.com. Orestes is compiling a reunion list for those years and also a list of ideas for reunion events.

All other RSVPs, suggestions or inquiries may be sent to Elaine Kelly, marketing and promotions coordinator, at ekelly@binghamton.edu.

Will the real DJ please stand up?

From: Peter Bort ’80
The guy in the foreground pulling out the vinyl record from its sleeve is me (in the days when hair was plentiful.) Gerry Martire is sitting at the console studying the liner notes of a really good jazz album. It’s Gerry’s jazz show on WHRW in the fall of 1978. I am his apprentice and it is one of the few moments I am not back in the library rooting around for a request.

There were a bunch of us from Johnson Hall who were involved with HRW. Steve Fogel’s handle was the Reverend Blakely St. Throop (named after the exit on I-80). Mitch Jaffe had a show. Mike Goldsmith had a show (he apprenticed for Matt Beck and the two later became roommates who were known for hording giant quantities of vinyl. In those days we would spend more bread on vinyl than bread. Also in our circle were Steve Morris (last known to be in Silicon Valley), Erik "The Captain" Eisen (who has since tripped off to other pastures not of this world, via Haight-Ashbury), Eric Lilienthal (known for his appearance on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire), and the perennial keeper of the flame at HRW, Ron Drumm. Mike L’Ecyuer transferred to Geneseo to be with the love of his life, Dale, and carried the late night gonzo radio passion with him.

Gerry Martire is a much-loved DJ on Q104 and WAXQ, Mike Goldsmith is successful music biz lawyer and last I knew Eric Lilienthal is still working in television. The rest of us are in psychology (Mitch Jaffe), corporate world (Steve Fogel), energy conservation (Mike L’Ecuyer) and law practice (me).

From: Jim (Landy) Carlsen-Landy, BA ’83, MS ’85
The photo of "WHRW Fall 1978" on page 22 of the Winter 2005 Journal definitely brings back some memories, since I’m fairly sure that’s me standing in the foreground, Jim (Landy) Carlsen-Landy, BA ’83, MS ’85. In those days I was better known on the air as Sydney Oquaga, late-late-night jazz (and related topics) DJ.

I’m not positive, but the guy at the console is probably Peter Shapiro ’76, and the face behind me is most likely Matt Beck ’81, ’84. Whether the clock says 4:20 a.m. or p.m. is anyone’s guess. You could have found the three of us in the studio any day, any time during those years.

The angle and reflections in the photo indicate that it was taken from the old newsroom, which was separated from the engineering booth by double-pane soundproof glass. Well, mostly soundproof, depending on how loud we had the monitors cranked up in the booth.

Bev (Carlsen) Carlsen-Landy ’75, ’80
and I will celebrate our 25th anniversary in August. We have four terrific sons: Kris, Jeff, Erik and David, and have been living near Dallas since 1985.

I’m still sporadically in touch with Peter and I heard recently from fellow Looghamite Steve Fogel ’83, both living in NYC. I would love to hear from other WHRW alumni from that era at JimCL42@alumni. binghamton.edu.

From: Alan Weiner, PhD ’77
I recently received my Winter 2005 edition of the Binghamton Alumni Journal and was shocked to see what looked like a picture of me in the Alumni Happenings section on page 22 in the WHRW studio. I showed it to my wife who also immediately insisted that it was me. I was still a bit skeptical until I received a call from one of my old Binghamton friends who was calling to tell me she saw my picture in the Alumni Happenings. So at least I know I’m not imaging it. But here is the problem -- I graduated Binghamton in 1977 and the picture says fall of 1978. Are you sure of your date? If so, I have a doppelganger somewhere in the world. The other mystery is why I’d be standing in the radio station studio. I didn’t work there and have only vague memories of ever walking in there. But then again, the Campus Pub was only a few steps down the hall from there, so I’m not surprised if it’s a fuzzy memory.

I’d be really interested to know if anybody else lays claim to being the person in the picture. But I doubt it -- I know my nose anywhere. Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks.

Remembering a sunny day

CIW photo (used in Winter ’05 issue):
"Liz Collins has a great memory. Sue Numann and Kathy Monahan were in the CIW picture. Her memory of our degrees and where we are from was also correct. I don’t know anyone else in the picture either. Kathy and I were best friends but I have somehow lost touch with her. Does anyone know where she is? The last time I saw her was at her wedding."
-- Sue Numann Layman ’80

A football pick
Football photo (used in Fall ’04 issue):
"My guess is that picture is more like 1972 than it is 1978. Co-ed football was a popular intramural sport in those years, and I’d swear that Susan Cassuto is the dark-haired woman with the light-colored top in the middle of the picture. I could be wrong though, so I would be interested in knowing if anyone else placed this more accurately."
-- Ken Rogers ’74, 4-year Newingite

"Photography helps people to see."-- Berenice Abbott, photographer

For a decade, Evangelos Dousmanis has been helping people to see Binghamton University. . . its faces and places, its triumphs and tragedies, its special events and daily life.

A just-published portfolio, Binghamton University: Shaping an Image, The Photography of Evangelos Dousmanis, captures the breadth of them all.

From the time Van was hired in January 1995 to fill the newly created position of University photographer, the campus has seen unprecedented growth and change in its physical landscape, academic and research mission, national stature and community connections. Van has recorded it all, defining in the process our images and our memories.

This eloquent portfolio shares them. It will take you to places and events well remembered or when we could not go. It connects us to each other.

"During my years at Binghamton University, I found through my camera a microcosm of our culture that I tried faithfully to capture with all its complexities and dreams. Digital imaging has replaced the smell of chemicals and the sound of running water, but photography is still magic. And I hope this collection of photos taken over the past 10 years will give readers the opportunity to share some of the magic
I found at Binghamton University."
