Deaths
Mary Alice Northway Baker ’65 died in January 2004 in Spring Hill, Fla. She was “a good friend, a generous and lovely woman,” wrote Carolyn Wendell ’64. Mary is survived by her sister, Ellen.

Ruth Anne Chamberlain ’79 died April 8, 2003, at SUNY Upstate Medical University, Syracuse. Ruth had earned a master’s degree from
Syracuse University and was an avid Syracuse basketball fan. She worked as a production specialist at IBM in Endicott and served in the Army Reserve. Ruth was also a devoted Buddhist. She is survived by her mother, Dorothy, two sisters and a brother.

Nori NkeAka, MM ’86 died Jan. 29, 2004, at New York Presbyterian Hospital. He was 47. Born in Cameroon and raised in Nigeria, Nori survived the Biafran-Nigerian war of the late 1960s. He came to the U.S. in the early 1980s to study opera and earned his BA in music at the Eastman School of Music before coming to Binghamton, singing operatic roles from Mozart to Puccini to Joplin. He earned his PhD in musical arts and vocal performance at Boston University, where he researched and performed African-based classical art songs of Spain and Latin America. At that time, Nori began to develop his Calaloo Project of Igbo laments, Yoruba lullabies, Xhosa click songs and mornas from the Cape Verde Islands mixed with a wide-ranging repertoire that included Scottish and Jewish folk songs, German liede and more. His voice was described in Boston’s Bay Windows as “a voluptuous, rolling bass.” In 2001, his Calaloo Roots program premiered to a sold-out audience at the Museum for African Art, and he performed with the New York-based Opera Ebony Company. Nori taught voice at New York University and was a voice coach and assistant conductor for the Boys Choir of Harlem. He is recorded on American Folk Hymns and plans to release his Calaloo recordings were in process at the time of his death. Nori’s website, www.performer-nori.com, will remain on the Internet until 2005. He is survived by his mother, four sisters and two brothers.
