Harpur Law Council Mentor Program Kicks Off

The Harpur Law Council Associates' Committee recently initiated its Mentor Program, providing Binghamton students the opportunity to receive personal attention from Binghamton alumni practicing or involved in the field of law. The program, chaired by Mat Paulose Esq. '95 and Marc Brown '95, is slated to begin this fall.

The program will match undergraduates with a seasoned attorney, while law alumni get access to a pool of bright
lawyers-to-be. This will be a year-long relationship between pre-law juniors and alumni lawyers from around the country. Communication will be by e-mail, phone, letter or in-person. A reception is planned in early 2005 in New York City that will provide an opportunity for mentors and mentees to get together.

Interested participants are required to complete a one-page online application; see harpur.binghamton.edu/lawdirect/mentor.htm for details. If law alumni have any questions they should contact Mat Paulose in New York City at mpaulose@koehler-isaacs.com or 917-551-1353 or Marc Brown in Buffalo at mbrown@phillipslytle.com or 716-504-5755.
Alumni Association Award Recipients

The following alumni have received Alumni Association awards in recognition of their service. They were honored at an Excellence Awards Dinner held in October.

Glenn G. Bartle Award
Thomas Brown '61 was named recipient of the Glenn G. Bartle Distinguished Alumnus Award. This award honors alumni who have served the University through the Alumni Association and the Foundation while also serving their community, career and country. It serves as a memorial to Dr. Glenn G. Bartle, first president of Harpur College.

Dr. Brown, a retired, board-certified anesthesiologist and clinical associate professor of anesthesiology at Upstate Medical Center, has been an active supporter of Harpur College. For many years Dr. Brown was a preceptor in the local Harpur College Physician Mentoring Program. He is one of the founding members of the Harpur Alumni Physician Council and is currently a member of the Harpur College Advisory Council. In 2002, Dr. Brown was the recipient of the Harpur College Alumni Award in the division of science and mathematics for his distinguished service to the college and his commitment to the lasting value of an arts and sciences education.

In addition, Dr. Brown serves as the program coordinator for the Harpur Physician Alumni Summer Mentoring Program, which is a special project of the Harpur Physician Alumni Council. The program is in its fourth year and pairs pre-med undergraduates with alumni doctors in the New York metro area during summer break.

In 1996, Dr. Brown and his wife, Beverly Brown '78, established the Brown Health Professions Scholarship to assist a Harpur College student interested in a healthcare career. In addition, they have supported the Harpur College Faculty Development Fund and the Campaign for Binghamton University.

Dr. Brown is a devoted husband and father to Christine Krauss, Stephen T. Brown '80 (a former member of the Alumni Board of Directors), Amy Pritchard, Mark Brown and Richard Brown. In addition, Dr. Brown is a devoted grandfather who spends as much time with his grandchildren as possible.

Distinguished Service Award

David Gouldin Esq. was named recipient of the Distinguished Service Award, given in recognition of a person whose life and significant achievements serve as examples of the University's aspirations for its students.

Gouldin, a partner at Levene, Gouldin & Thompson LLP in Binghamton, is a graduate of Princeton University and Cornell University and has practiced law in the Broome County area since 1966. He is a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers and the International Academy of Trial Lawyers. He has been named to "Best Lawyers in America" and "Who's Who in the World." He has also published articles and book chapters in his field and has been asked to lecture at numerous legal education programs.

Gouldin's service to Binghamton University includes having served as chair and vice chair of the Harpur Forum, and serving on the Events Center Fund-Raising Committee as well as sustaining his long-time membership in the Binghamton University Athletics Club.

Gouldin has also had a long-standing commitment to community service in the Southern Tier. He has served on numerous boards and held various positions including the board of directors of Partnership 2000, the executive committee of Binghamton General Hospital Foundation, member of the board of directors of United Health Services Hospitals Inc., member and board officer of the Broome County Urban League, chair of the board of directors of the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena, trustee of Tabernacle United Methodist Church, president and member of the board of directors of the United Way of Broome County and past chair of the Binghamton Parks and Recreation Commission. Currently, he serves as the chair of the board of trustees of the Link Foundation and chair of the Harpur Forum.

Program Development Award
David Berkowitz '00 was named recipient of the Alumni Association Program Development Award, which recognizes and honors a graduate who has been instrumental in serving the University by volunteering time and talent in a multitude of programs including admissions work, fund raising, career development of students, alumni club development and other Alumni Association, Foundation or External Affairs programs.

Berkowitz, director of marketing at icrossing in New York City, has given his time selflessly and consistently for the past four years. After being selected Student of the Year and Hinman College commencement speaker in 2000, this alumnus immediately began volunteer work.

He is the founder of the Hinman Alumni Network and returns every year for Hinman's recognition ceremonies. He also has participated in Hinman Hysteria, the annual spring games on the Hinman quad, for eight years. Berkowitz serves as chair of the Metro NY Alumni Network and co-hosts the annual Central Park Alumni Day (Hinman co-recreational football and a cappella event in the park) each year. He is a committed supporter of the Jewish Alumni of Binghamton and has served on the Alumni Association Board since 2001.

In addition, Berkowitz mentors students from the School of Management and has participated in countless alumni-sponsored events. His limitless energy and vitality touch the lives of alumni in many meaningful and lasting ways.

Alumni Association Special Recognition Award

Allen Zwickler '79, a money manager and managing director at First Manhattan Co., a privately held investment advisory firm, is an exemplary alumnus. He became involved with the School of Management's Metro Advisory Board in 2001 and has helped to establish a sensible set of by-laws that have been enforced and are being adopted by the school's other advisory boards. The board, with Zwickler's input, has also made significant progress in increasing the school's profile and helping to widen the scope of its curriculum.

In 2004, Zwickler became involved with the Hillel program. His enthusiasm and continued devotion have contributed to Hillel's continued success in its mission to promote associations among Jewish students on campus.

In addition to his other volunteer activities, Zwickler and his wife, Ellen, have established an endowed scholarship in the School of Management to benefit students whose talent outstretches their financial resources. He has focused on enabling students of modest means to become the best that they can by benefiting from a Binghamton education.

Tau Alumni Society Holds
Second Annual Golf Challenge
The Tau Alpha Upsilon Alumni Society hosted a golf challenge June 10, 2004, at Van Cortlandt Golf Course in the Bronx. The 50 golfers who attended included staff from the University's Athletic Department and other departments as well as alumni from 1969 to 1996. The Second Annual TAU Golf Challenge was coordinated by Brian Segel '85 and Sanjay Malhotra '85, who organized the event to highlight recent and future fundraising endeavors of the organization and to have some good, old-fashioned fun!

Activities that were part of this event included golf tournament contests, dinner, cocktails and raffles. Cash prizes were donated to the University.

Here's what a few of those attending the event had to say:

  • Harvey Kutz '70, "I didn't even know that the TAU Alumni Society existed until I received the invitation. What a great event."
  • Michael Marcus '87, "This society has come a long way in a very short period of time. I can't wait until next year's event."
  • Binghamton University Associate Athletic Director Matt Bassett, "You guys simply ROCK! Great job! Great time!"
  • Steve Stimell, '84, "I just want to go home, I'm so tired. I had way too much fun today!"

Brian Segel noted, "The second annual event brought in more brothers than last year's inaugural event. The TAU Alumni Society looks forward to next year's golf event when we expect full capacity."

The society is currently planning the biggest event in the 43-year history of the fraternity for mid to late fall 2004 at Binghamton University. All TAU brothers past and present will be invited and encouraged to attend.

Staten Island Students Attend Summer Party

On July 28, 2004, alumni Tony and Marie Mascolo, both '77, hosted a terrific Summer Send-Off event for new students coming to Binghamton University from Staten Island.

More than 70 students, parents and alumni gathered at The Parsonage on Arthur Kill Road in Staten Island to celebrate. Tony, a member of the Binghamton University Alumni Association Board of Directors, showed a DVD he created of photos and film of the University from his student days in the 1970s as well as current campus life. The DVD captured some of the long-standing traditions of the University.

Vice President for Student Affairs Rodger Summers spoke and tried to assuage any anxiety new students and their parents might have during this transition. Director of Undergraduate Admissions Cheryl Brown also spoke about the exciting time new students will have at the University. She also assured students and their parents that they had made the right decision in selecting Binghamton.

Equinox, a band composed of Binghamton University alumni Scott Krokoff '93, Brett Klein '94, Robert Hoff '95 and George Dierna '94 performed at the event.

Alumni Association seeks nominations
The nominating committee of the Alumni Association Board of Directors is accepting applications for election to the board in winter 2005. John D'Aquila '86 followed his passion and his wine glass, and
in 1997 founded SelectWinesLLC.com. When it came time to find and recruit talented people, he knew exactly where to go for help.

John contacted the Career Development Center (CDC) at Binghamton University.
It's experience that brings him back to Binghamton. "Since we are located less than 30 minutes from Manhattan, we have a wide selection of colleges and recruits. While we recruit from many, Binghamton has been the most consistent with regard to high-quality, well-educated, computer-literate students who like to work and make a difference in a growing entrepreneurial company," he said. "Binghamton's CDC has been an integral part of our success."

To learn more about how to recruit Binghamton students, visit the CDC website at cdc.binghamton.edu/employer/employers.html or contact Bill McCarthy, CDC associate director, at 607-777-2329.

Binghamton University's Continuing Education and Outreach Division presents its spring 2005 international study program to Central Europe. After decades of division by the cold war, Mitteleuropa is once again emerging as a cohesive cultural entity. On this trip you'll experience the culture, art, history and architecture of the heart of Europe, focusing on the capital cities of Prague, Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest. The rich history of these very distinct and different cities is explored, as is the contemporary flair and energy of post-communist society. Excursions to the countryside uncover a more traditional culture and architecture that seems to be virtually untouched by time.

The trip leaves Binghamton on April 20, 2005, going first to Prague, where we spend four nights. Highlights include St. Vita's Cathedral, Prague Castle, old Jewish sites and nearby castles. We drive by deluxe bus to Vienna, with a lunch stop in the quaint town of Mikulov. We'll spend three nights in Vienna, which is highlighted with visits to the Lichtenstein Museum, Schonbrunn Palace, the Hofburg and Spanish Riding School. Next we'll drive to Budapest via Bratislava, the ancient capital of the Slovak Republic, to visit the majestic castle overlooking the Danube River. We spend three nights in Budapest and see St. Matthias Church, the Castle District, Fisherman's Bastion, Heroes' Square and travel to the countryside to visit small towns.

The trip costs $3,295 and includes travel to Europe and return, accommodations in three-star hotels, deluxe bus travel in Europe, all breakfasts, two dinners and three lunches, entrance to all sites and experienced tour guides and leaders throughout the trip.
