Grace (Betty) Frank Dalrymple '62 died Nov. 21, 2002, in Parker, Colo. "Betty never lost her lust for learning that was cultivated at Harpur College," wrote her family. She is survived by her husband, Bob Dalrymple '62, sons Scott, Neal and Bruce, and six grandchildren.

Burt Kahn '64 died Nov. 28, 2002 in the Bay of Islands off the coast of Honduras. He was 59. A tennis teacher at Tower Tennis on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, Burt was clearly well respected and well loved by tennis colleagues and students alike. "He always tried to explain tennis in terms of life," said nationally ranked tennis player Nancy Neff, whose three children took lessons from Burt, in an article about him in The New York Times. "He tried to incorporate his teaching to the needs of the individual student, and he was as enthusiastic and passionate as he was analytical." Barbara Julius, whose children were also Burt 's students, was quoted in the article as saying: "If I think of the 10 things I like about living in New York City, Burt would be on the list." An avid traveler, Burt spent vacations". . . on African safaris, hiking the Himalayas, bird-watching in Panama or exploring the Amazon with [Lorraine] Best, his companion," noted the Times article. "Burt was a great athlete, dominant basketball player and all-New York City tennis player, and made his career and life around teaching tennis in Manhattan," wrote fellow alumnus Ken Walzer '64.

Gerald A. Hathaway '64 died Aug. 26, 2002. Gerald was a sales representative at Lockheed Martin and lived in Centerville, Ohio. He is survived by his wife, Sharon.

Thomas J. Gorman '64 died Aug. 9, 2002, in Binghamton. He was 61. A retired 30-year employee of the Internal Revenue Service, Tom was vice president of the National Muscular Dystrophy Association, a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Binghamton, and an avid New York Yankees fan. He is survived by two sisters, a brother and many relatives.

Weldon L. Dyson Jr. '73 died Jan. 16, 2003 in Binghamton. He is survived by his parents, Lorine and Roy Jr., and five sisters and brothers.

Alan Slepman '76 died Jan. 13, 2003. He was 48. During his time at Binghamton, Alan was dorm president of Delaware Hall, was voted into the Newing College Hall of Fame, managed the campus New York Times subscription service and was the coach and manager of the B- League champion intramural softball team, the Underdogs. "Those who knew him at college and the many more who have known him since will always be grateful for the goodness he brought into our lives, for he was a great and caring guy, with a hilarious sense of humor," reads a tribute written by his friends and fellow alumni. "He always made us laugh, and motivated each of us to be a better person. He was much loved and will be greatly missed." Alan is survived by his wife and children. Peter Shernoff '77 died Nov. 30, 2003. He was 47. "Peter was not only a joy to know but an incredibly selfless and thoughtful person with a positive spirit and a great sense of humor," wrote Arthur Weinwurm '77. "All of us were so fortunate to have had him in our lives." Peter is survived by his parents, Ruth and Herb, a brother, and many friends and relatives. William P. Speed Jr. '83 died Aug. 12, 2002. He was 45. Bill was an auditor with the North Carolina State Department of Insurance. A member of Matthews United Methodist Church and of the New Directors Sunday School Class, he was also active with the Men 's Homeless Shelter and the Metro Prom in Charlotte. He is survived by his wife, Eileen, three daughters, his parents and a sister.

Eric Munz '85 died Aug. 14, 2002. Eric was an employee of the University of Maryland, where he handled the finances and budgets of certain University Club Graduate School programs for more than 10 years. He also coached and managed the university 's club lacrosse team. Pallbearers at his funeral included Sean Moynihan '85 and Christopher Buck '88. Eric is survived by his daughter, Lydia, his parents and his sister, Christine Munz Buck '88.

Deborah Yolanda DeShong '96 died Jan. 21, 2003. She was 27. While a student at Binghamton, Deborah was a member of the Charles Drew Medical Society and the Binghamton University Gospel Choir. Deborah earned her master 's in public health from Hunter College. She was pursuing a second master 's in epidemiology at Columbia University and was looking forward to beginning a PhD program at the University at Buffalo, to which she had received a full scholarship. Deborah attended Beulah Church of the Nazarene and was an active member and volunteer in many church- sponsored programs. She was also a world traveler. She studied in France and in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and visited England, Trinidad, St. Vincent, Quebec, Thailand, India, and many states, including Hawaii. She worked for several medical and health- related institutions, including Mount Sinai School of Medicine, the Department of Health and Project Reach Youth, Inc. Deborah is survived by her parents, Nathaniel and Patricia, a sister and a brother.

William C. Walke, MBA '00 died in April 2002. He was 34. Appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy in 1986, Bill was sent to Pensacola upon graduation to be a student aviator, received his Wings of Gold in 1991 and went on to complete his aircraft training in helicopters in Milton, Fla. He was stationed in Japan from 1992 to 1994, went to San Diego for a year for further training, then returned to Japan. He served in Owego with the Defense Contract Management Command at Lockheed Martin Federal Systems from 1998 to 2001, when he resigned from the Navy. Following his honorable discharge, he began his civilian career as a commercial manager with GE Power Systems. Bill is survived by his parents, Bill and MaryEllen, and two sisters.
