To the Editor:

I think I am going to stop reading my Alumni Journal; it's just too depressing. Recent editions have told me that the Pub has been closed, Division I sports is beginning its inevitable corruption of the University, and overflow crowds greet politicians such as Hillary Clinton. What have you guys done to my college? Don't the students realize anymore that their function is -- while having a few too many beers or whatever -- trying to change the world to the way it ought to be? Of course they eventually wake up hung over and disillusioned but better people for having tried. They have the whole rest of their lives to watch other people play sports and kiss up to corrupt politicians.

To the Editor:

I cried hard when I read in the Alumni Journal that Ken Simon '89 had died in the collapse of the Twin Towers on Sept. 11. He lived across the hall from me on Hughes 2A my freshman year, 1986. Always he volunteered to be designated driver so we all got home safely. So it didn't surprise me when I read that he spent his final minutes trying to find and rescue his father, who also died in the cataclysm. I'm glad you made mention of his penchant for juggling. He was a talented performer. He had one of the only VCRs on the floor, which of course made him even more popular. In my mind he will always be the face of 9/11, and the personification of selflessness and dignity. My best wishes to the family who loved him.
