Binghamton students have what it takes
Alumni employers praise Career Development Center

We asked a couple of alumni who work with Binghamton's Career Development Center as part of their hiring process about their experience. Steven Scarpati '92, MBA '93, vice president, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, and Dan Black '94, area director of campus recruiting, Ernst & Young, have found the CDC to be a valuable resource.

Both Black and Scarpati are impressed with the quality of candidates they have interviewed and hired through the CDC. "Naturally, I am a big fan of Binghamton students," said Black. "As an alumnus, I know that the education they receive is of the highest quality, and I am always eager to hire as many as I can. Once working at Ernst & Young, Binghamton alumni prove that they've earned their place here -- they have an excellent performance record at the firm. In fact, Binghamton has been our single largest source for candidates over the last three years, and five Binghamton alumni were promoted to partner in the last year alone."

Scarpati, who relies on the CDC for his annual recruiting trip, said, "When we ask for something, everybody is very accommodating. They post flyers for us and help to set up rooms. They follow up on issues and always call me back. They make sure food is there and take care of all those nice little things. They're very customer-service oriented."

"The CDC staff is tremendous," agreed Black. "In all my years of recruiting, I cannot recall one instance in which I received less than the highest level of service from them. They are very flexible with the recruiters and firm representatives, and I truly feel like a valued client each time I visit the University. They also help to make the recruitment process easier by sponsoring career fairs and mock interviews for Binghamton students. As a result of their efforts, students are better prepared for the recruiting process.

"By submitting our job postings to the CDC, we are able to reach thousands of student job seekers with relative ease," he added. "The CDC staff accumulates the resumés and organizes them by position, and also coordinates interview sign-ups and related communications. This saves us a great deal of time and effort, and we are very grateful for their help."

Black also uses eRecruiting, the CDC's Web-based system. "We find that it really helps to streamline the process. Job postings and resumé selection can be done virtually, and students can submit resumés with the click of a button. With that kind of speed and access, students and recruiters alike can work smarter and faster -- making the process much easier for all those involved." "How can I say what I like about BU students?" said Scarpati. "'Hungry' is a good word. BU students' attitude is ÔI'll do whatever it takes.' And another thing: Binghamton hires have great longevity and loyalty. I come back every October and look forward to it. We usually interview about 25 people. Of those, we hire one or two every year."
