Career planning panel timely and helpful

The 50 students and alumni who attended a panel discussion, "Planning Careers In Today's Economy," said they found the discussion helpful, timely and pertinent to today's job market. "It opened my eyes to change my strategy," said one. "It was a good reality check concerning what a job search is about in the real world now," said another.

The Oct. 1 event, held in Casadesus Recital Hall, was hosted by the Southern Tier Alumni Network in association with United University Professions and the Career Development Center.

The panel discussion covered issues relating to the process of entering the workforce in today's economy, job search advice, career change techniques and tips on surviving layoffs. A question-and-answer session followed. Bill McCarthy, associate director of the Career Development Center, moderated the panel. The panelists and their topics included Steve Ovadia '91, vice president, ProActive Solutions, who spoke on entering the workforce in today's economy; Patrick Doyle, executive director, Broome-Tioga Workforce Development System, who spoke on job search techniques; and Mary Sacco, owner of Crest Personnel Agency, who spoke on career changes.

Ovadia advised a multi-faceted approach to working through a soft economy: understand the challenges; take inventory of your strengths, develop a vision and develop a plan.
