Alumni art lovers get together in Soho

by Ingrid Husisian

About 50 alumni got together in Soho's trendy Artists Space for the inaugural Spring Social sponsored by the Binghamton University Alumni Metro Club Visual Arts Committee.

The Visual Arts Committee of the Metro Alumni Club connects alumni artists, collectors and art professionals living in the tri-state area. The committee's founding members, Tracey Bashkoff '88, John Brunelli '97, Daile Kaplan, Jennifer Kibel '93, Barry Neuman '79 and Erica Strongin '94, hope that the Spring Social will be the first of many opportunities to get all BU alumni together who are interested in exploring the incredible cultural riches in the visual arts that New York City has to offer.

Artists Space was founded in 1972 as a nonprofit institution supporting unaffiliated contemporary artists working in the visual arts. In its 25-year history, Artists Space has presented the work of more than 5,000 emerging artists.

Atlanta networking event posts high turnout

from Paula Brightwell '97, network coordinator

The SUNY Alumni Club of Atlanta hosted its second annual networking event Jan. 10 at Tony's American Grille & Tap in Roswell, Ga. The coordinators contacted 45 SUNY locations this year to invite them to participate. We were blown away with the overwhelming response: close to 160 people came together. There were alumni from 20 different campuses, which more than doubled the number we had last year.

While it was great to see familiar faces, it was fantastic to see all the new faces. For everyone who attended, the shared connection to New York state was a potent conversation starter. It's good to hear the excitement in people's voices when they realize how many other fellow New Yorkers or SUNY alumni are here in Atlanta.

We also enjoyed having special guests travel down from New York to join us at this event. Our main guest speaker was Dr. Michael Luck, vice president of philanthropy and alumni affairs for SUNY. He congratulated us on our successful event and hopes to develop SUNY programming in other locations using our network as a role model.

Guests also visited from individual campuses, including: Jeff Pratt, associate director of alumni affairs, SUNY Oswego; Jeremy Jones, assistant vice president for development, Empire State College; and Paul Leduc, director of the annual fund, SUNY Plattsburgh.

Hinman alumni enjoy BU vs. BU basketball

from David Berkowitz '00

About 20 former Hinmanites turned out at McFadden's, a local sports bar on Second Avenue and 42nd Street in New York City, to watch the Bearcats take on Boston University live on MSG Feb. 9. The Bearcats unfortunately did not win -- the final score was 82-85 -- but everyone at McFadden's had a great time. We were finally able to raffle off the stuffed Bearcat from last year's ice-skating party! Elisa Jacobson '89 won it. Everyone was really blown away seeing the Bearcats on TV, especially for a home game, and said they'd love to go to other such events.
