Alumni Gatherings

The way they were: Old dorm mates reunite at Delaware Hall

A group of alumni who used to reside in Delaware Hall (Newing College) returned to campus June 18-19 for a reunion and stayed overnight in the very rooms they inhabited while students here! The event was organized by Dave Bolotsky '85. Following a tour of campus, they visited Mountainview to see how today's students live and provided insights to Terry Webb, director of residential life, about what makes residential college living so special at Binghamton University. The guys attended a B-Mets game and played softball and volleyball just like they did in the good ol' days. They even recreated a photo that was printed in the 1985 Newing College yearbook.

Michelle Adams spearheads Class of '94 anniversary giving

A Regency Hotel reception for the Class of '94 hosted by Michelle Adams, Brian Paul, Kathy Miller Hamrahi and Steve Hamrahi, all '94, drew 18 alumni who enjoyed the opportunity to reconnect. Adams, who spoke at the event, spearheaded a 10th anniversary giving program and stressed that any gift, in any amount, makes a difference at Binghamton. She also encouraged classmates with sufficient means to recognize their milestone year by becoming members of Binghamton University's Leadership Society. Society members give a minimum of $1,000 annually.

Alumni Association Director Heck meets with San Francisco alumni

Several Bay area alumni met with Alumni Association director Richard Heck and his wife, Sandra Price, May 5 -- Cinco de Mayo -- for food and drinks at the Triple Rock Brewery in Berkeley. "Conversation was warm, spirited and wide-ranging," said Heck of his meeting with Jim Wilcox '74, Doug Berman '81, Hazel Weiss '74 (with her service dog "Hams"), Chris Lucas '88 and partner Paul McCreesh. "Talk arose more than once of the value of alumni connecting regularly."

At San Francisco's Project Artaud Theater, Heck met with 30 San Francisco alumni at a May 7 performance by Galumpha, a dance group comprised of three accomplished Binghamton alumni: Andy Horowitz '89, Greg O'Brien '86, and Marlon Torres '02. "At the reception afterward, many kind words and lively conversations ensued between artists and fellow alumni," said Heck.

During his stay in San Francisco, Heck also met with Marty Triano '76, past president of the Alumni Association Board of Directors, and presented Triano with the Glenn G. Bartle award; graphic artist Deena Landau '64; Weisband award winner Clyde Ikeda '73 and his wife, Lisa; and with Grant Courtright '50 in San Jose.

"I found alumni in the area to be remarkably supportive, engaging and hungry for more contact with other alumni and their alma mater," said Heck. He also noted that regional coordinator Ed DeMattia ' 86 is looking for volunteers to help him set up some regular get-togethers, ranging from casual luncheons or happy hours to more organized events surrounding games, panels, performances or art exhibits. Any takers? Contact DeMattia at edd@mediawrites.com.

BU Events Center tour and lunch

Twenty-five members of the Binghamton area's Alumni Association Founders club enjoyed a tour of BU's Events Center and lunch in the Susquehanna Room June 21. Bob Diute '52 and Dick Ulmer '50 served as hosts for the event.

"Those who stayed home because they thought they had seen the Events Center at a Basketball game did not realize what they missed," said Diute. "There is so much to the place that we don't see at an event."

"They sure didn't have this kind of place when we played at the U-E school for Triple-Cities!' said Bob Corwin '57. Eddy Esserman '49 added, "It is nice to get up on campus -- the food's pretty reasonable and good and there's lots to see, too."

Chinese alumni reconnect after 30+ years

Hans Chen '70 and his wife, Frances Liao Chen '70, hosted a reunion of Chinese alumni who graduated from the School of Management in 1970 -- the year the school was established as a separate entity. "We had not seen each other for more than 30 years, but we caught up after only 5 minutes," said Chen. "We had a great time." Chen and his fellow alumni enjoyed a visit from Dean Upinder Dhillon, who updated the group on SOM's progress since their graduation.

The Chens have a daughter, Emily Chen '07, who is currently enrolled in the School of Management.
