Alumni Gatherings

Dining for Success

The Mandela Room was filled with nearly 100 people for mock-tails and dinner at the Dining for Success etiquette dinner Oct. 29. Joe Laskaris, catering manager of Sodexho, offered students basic guidance on etiquette in formal dining and business situations. For example, if a prospective employer invites you to dinner the night before a job interview, how should you act? How do you make small talk? How can you work your own particular skills or area of expertise into a conversation? And if something difficult to eat (like spaghetti) or something totally unfamiliar is served, how do you eat it gracefully? Students got tips in these and other areas, and had the opportunity to put what they were learning to the test while dining with University staff, who acted as hosts for each table.

More than 40 alumni gathered in Manhattan at the offices of Davis & Gilbert, LLP Nov. 12 for a panel discussion, "Strategies of a Successful Career in Marketing." The event was put together by the School of Management Young Alumni Advisory Council.

It was a terrific evening and a great opportunity for alumni to network.

BU vs. SU Men's Basketball Game

Although the Bearcats were not victorious, the Binghamton University vs. Syracuse men's basketball game, Dec. 13, was a lot of fun for everyone who attended the event held at the Carrier Dome. The Alumni Association sponsored a bus trip to Syracuse for the event, and the 37 people who enjoyed the ride participated in trivia games and won prizes based on their knowledge of campus and campus life. At the University Sheraton on the Syracuse University Campus, 60 people enjoyed a pre-game buffet in the Seasons Sports Bar while networking and mingling with other alumni and their families. In addition, a group of TAU alumni who traveled from New York City to attend the game joined the group.

15th Annual Metro Career Fair

The 15th Annual Metro Career Fair, held at the Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers Jan. 6, 2004, was a great success, surpassing previous years in attendance and breadth of careers represented: More than 80 alumni volunteers representing more than 30 career fields staffed tables and responded to questions from hundreds of students who sought information about potential career paths. The enthusiastic responses from alumni again indicated how much they enjoy participating in the program.

The evening also included a panel discussion, held prior to the Career Fair, at which four alumni spoke about "Making the Transition from Student to Professional." Panelists included Emmanuel Andre '01 of Association of Black Foundation Executives, Catherine Berlen '02 of KPMG, LLP, Edward Muradian '03 of Deloitte and Touche, and Elissa Zaidel '00 of Dewey Ballantine, LLP. "They all did a wonderful job of relating their personal stories about starting out in their careers," said Siusan Orlovsky, MBA '93, who coordinated the event.
